This year, Australia and Thailand will celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations, starting with the release of an official anniversary logo.
On 21 January 2022, H.E. Mr Thani Thongphakdi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and H.E. Mr Allan McKinnon, Australian Ambassador to Thailand launched the 70th anniversary logo at the Residence of the Australian Ambassador in Bangkok.
Thailand and Australia have a long-standing and significant relationship, dating back to 1952. The relationship was elevated to Strategic Partnership status in 2020, reflecting our deep people to people connections, and ensuring Thailand and Australia could enhance our already close cooperation across economics, security, science, water, energy, and education sectors.
The Governments of Australia and Thailand organised a logo design competition to increase awareness of Thais and Australians, of the extent and importance of the relationship between nations. Miss Chanida Hengkuntod, a Thai props designer, won the competition with a design encompassing aspects of both cultures. The number seven represents the Australian kangaroo and boomerang, while the zero represents the Thai elephant. The inclusion of Thai art elements, Kranok and prajam yam represent the rich Thai culture. The design is in blue and red tones, similar to the Australian and Thai flags.
The logo will feature in planned celebration activities throughout the year, both in Thailand and Australia, including a ‘70 Years 70 People’ exhibition, landmark mapping, a film festival, a hands-on science exhibition, and an interactive art exhibition.
The logo’s kangaroo and elephant walking forward together, symbolises our relationship. We look forward to celebrating the bilateral relationship over the course of this year, and to ensuring it continues to grow from strength to strength for many years to come.
